Trip from life
Drawing Challenges For All
"We have no art. We do everything as well as we can."
This is a Balinese saying that Sister Corita Kent (1918-1986) quoted frequently in her classes, at the Immaculate Heart College in Hollywood. She was a major 20th-century American artist, who, together with Jan Stewart, decided to create a book about drawing, called "Learning by Heart". In it, we've found motivation to create a project which is much inspired by her teachings. We both agree with her vision, that more important than to learn how to draw, technically, is to learn how to see; that more important is life and love. Attention to the ordinary world. We offer people from all backgrounds an opportunity to join us in this trip to the frontiers, if not the core, of the art's fantastic trio: eyes, heart and hands. Each week, we're setting to meet and play. We are to challenge you to lower your height to a child's level and rise above what you even forgot you knew. These will not be traditionally academic classes, although we can support our drawings on its structural techniques; we'll be all around, in the studio, the streets, the gardens and museums. The goal is to create a bridge that unites them and allows the student to unlock the secrets of their own creative capacities. Starting points are all around us: objects, paintings, sculptures, buildings, flowers, dogs, music and people. As the human body is the closest form to our desire and self-image, nude model drawing will have it's strong presence in our program. Despite this, this is not only drawing-orientated; we'll challenge you to paint, make collages and make small or big constructions with different and accessible tools. To look, to listen and to do. We are happy to take you in.
