Exhibition Text

Spring in Berlin is a brief period of respite – between the severity of winter and summer – in the city. It is a chance both to reflect on what has come before, and also to think about what lies ahead. On the 25th & 26th of May, What’s Left will celebrate this ephemeral moment at the werkstatttraum e.V. (“ttt-Atelier”). What’s Left invites current and past artists who have spent time in “ttt” to take old works, materials, and concepts, and present them in a new light. This year, the work is wide-reaching in its scope, with video and performance pieces exhibited alongside figurative painting and photographic images. The market stalls outside the atelier will give way to a stage and musical acts throughout the evening on Saturday.

The werkstatttraum e.V. community is fundamental to the character both of the atelier and of the exhibition. “ttt” is a permanent place for transitory people; artists, musicians, designers, poets, writers, and many more have moved through the atelier, learning from each other, and making space for new ideas and energies as each year passes. What’s Left is not only an exhibition of artworks, but also an invitation to Berlin, into the “ttt” community— a melting pot for the subversive people of Berlin or those who are drawn towards unconventional ways of thinking. Since its inception, werkstatttraum e.V. has been the birthplace for many alternative ideas concerning the production of culture and structures of organisation/social interaction.

What’s Left is only a current snapshot of the space. No two exhibitions or open studios at “ttt” will ever look alike, and it is exactly that diversity and idiosyncrasy that defines this weekend’s show. When we simplify the extra pieces and present only the most vital details, what’s left is still the same spirit of creation and community.
